Andrée-Anne Mercier is a multidisciplinary artist from Repentigny, Quebec and works in Montreal. Her work is inspired by Japanese culture and retro movements, and explores several modes of expression – painting, video games, sculpture, installation art, 3D modelling and animation. The artist has completed two residencies in Japan, at Studio Kura and AIRY.

In these two paintings by Andrée-Anne Mercier, we see the results of an aesthetic exploration by the artist while completing an artist residency in Japan in 2017. The compositions stem from the memory of this exploration of the architecture and urban planning of several Japanese residential districts. While recording her memories of the spaces, the artist’s interest in nostalgic video games and the aesthetic associated with the pixelated environments within is evident. This interest results in compositions that oscillate between reality and fiction, and reality and memory.
