Oil on canvas

Brian Kipping was a Canadian artist and blues musician from Edmonton. As an artist, he was known especially for his oil paintings that emphasized the night light and well-known urban landmarks. Over the course of his too-short career, Kipping’s paintings were shown in about 150 group and solo exhibitions across Canada and overseas.

In this work by Brian Kipping, we see the bases of architectural columns (or pillars), but we cannot tell where they are. The work is broken into three spaces – we can tell that the columns support a ceiling and can make out some of the background – still maintaining the anonymity of the locations. There is also a sense of movement, perhaps of urban energy, as the subjects are just slightly out of focus.
